Anti
Scab legislation
October
25, 2006
Brothers and Sisters,
Today is the second reading of Bill C-27, better known as the
'anti-scab' legislation.
Teamsters Canada, as well as many other Unions, have worked tirelessly
to see that this legislation makes it into law and for the first
time, it looks very, very promising. Labour is well represented
on the Hill today, strong, united and fighting for what is fair.
This legislation could go a long way in allowing us some leverage
to achieve proper fair and equitable contracts. It is no wonder
that Fred Green is adamantly against it.
I have never met Fred Green. Though I have attempted to set up
an introductory meeting on a few occasions, we were unable to
get together. I have kind of given up, and now have resigned myself
to the fact that I tried and if it happens... well, then it happens.
I did send him a congratulatory letter on his promotion and the
wish that our two organizations can work together in the future
for mutual benefit. I don't know if a meeting is necessary to
do this, but I thought it might be worthwhile.
Even if we couldn't come to agreement concerning the meeting,
I have to agree with his attached letter claiming that Bill C-47
would..." dramatically alter the balance of bargaining power."
Of course, that is the only part of his letter that I can agree
on.
He's right. It would dramatically alter the balance of bargaining
power. It would move the balance closer to an 'even playing field',
allowing the Unions a fairer footing at negotiations.
Most reasonable people would agree that things are much more fair
when those in debate are evenly matched. However, I'm sure you
can see why the company, who have the upper hand at the moment,
would be opposed to this.
It is time that Labour gets a fair shake, and we must hope that
this Bill C-27 passes. It is not everything that is needed to
assist the bargaining process, but it is a good start. I'll keep
you informed.
Stay safe, stay Strong, stay United.
Fraternally,
Bill Brehl
President and proud member of the
