It is with great regret that I have to inform you that the anti-scab
legislation, Bill C-257, failed to pass its third reading in Parliament
today.
It was defeated by a margin of 177 to 122 (unofficial numbers).
I want to thank Phil Benson and Ken Deptuck, Teamsters lobbyists,
and also all other members, unionists and free thinking Canadians
who fought to get this Bill passed into law. You tried your best
and worked tirelessly for all of our sakes and we are grateful for
the effort.
I for one, will not give up hope that one day all of labour will
be protected federally against 'scabs' and their ilk, as we struggle
for decent, fair and equitable contracts. Contracts which recognize
not only our rights as workers, but also insure our safety and our
dignity.
Fraternally,
Bill Brehl
