Banked Overtime Fund
June 17, 2006
Brothers and Sisters,
I have attached a message from Brother Shayne Brighton that he has asked that I pass on.
Though, any sort of job action (including strike) at CPRail, will only be as a last resort, we must be prepared for that possibility. The TCRC MWED is not promoting a strike, especially at this juncture, prior to the exchange of demands. We are only asking that you be prepared for all eventualities.
However the preliminary results from the random phone survey would indicate that the membership is willing, ready and able to invoke any legal means of accomplishing a fair and equitable contract. You are telling us that you will fight for what you deserve and we hear you, we're proud of you and we will be governed accordingly.
Teamster Unity + Teamster Pride + Teamster Strength = Victory
Fraternally,

Here's Shayno's message:

Brother Bill Brehl,
Last year Brother Barry Keates inquired about the Appendix B-31 'Separate layoff Banked Overtime' and was told this only applied to employees that get laid off every year. This year he requested that I investigate this matter further and we found that layoff Bank overtime applies to all employees covered under our collective agreement. This Banked Overtime must be cashed out by December 31st of the year it was banked or draw from a salary from his/her bank following a layoff.
Brother Keates has suggested that those of us who may not be affected by a layoff, may consider the possibility of calling this banktime, our own personal Strike Fund, as the cash out date falls coincidently parallel to our proposed strike date. Putting any amount of overtime away for a rainy day is always a good idea in my books, but, this also shows the company we are preparing to strike, if provoked.
I genuinely believe it would be good strategy to communicate this message to all our Brothers and Sisters to maximize their own personal strike fund, not only to insure there income, but also show we can flex a little muscle. The word is out in Revelstoke, BC. and we are already starting to protect our interests.
I also believe we should "Be Prepared" to strike, if we must! And if we don't, we could all certainly use the extra cash to pay off our Christmas bills.
In Solidarity,
Shayne Brighton
