CPR charged in connection with the death
of Bob Martin.
December
21, 2006
Brothers and Sisters,
In December 2005, we tragically lost Brother Bob Martin when he
was fatally injured at work clearing ice in a tunnel on the Revelstoke
Division.
Last week charges were filed by the Crown Attorney's office against
Canadian Pacific Railway, in connection with Bob's death. I understand
that there are five (5) charges in all, under two (2) sections
of Part II of the Canada Labour Code and that there are no individual
charges against any persons.
We do not have a lot of information at this time but it will be
forthcoming and I will keep you apprised.
Though Bob will never be forgotten, especially by those who loved
him, perhaps closure will finally be reached.
Whatever the outcome of these charges, let us hope that CPRail
understands the importance of providing a safe and healthy workplace
and that they re-inforce a commitment to the safety of their employees.
Remember to look after not only yourselves, but also each other....
because our safety is much too important to leave in the hands
of management.
