"Teamsters
Care" Update
May 13th, 2006
Brothers and Sisters,
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian women. In 2006
it is expected that over 22000 women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer. 5300 will die from it.
On
Mother's day, try to remember this and make a donation to the
Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca), the Breast Cancer Society
of Canada (www.bcsc.ca ) or to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
(www.cbcf.org ).
One
(1) in nine (9) Canadian Women are expected to develop breast
cancer in their lifetime and one (1) in twenty seven (27) will
die of it. I lost my own Mother to cancer over twenty years ago,
and I believe all of us have been affected by this disease one
way or another. For your Mothers, for your wives, for your daughters,
for your friends and for yourself, give so that we can make cancer
history.
You
can make a donation of money or you can commit to donate some
of your time. I try to do a little of both but with my schedule,
I always end up sending a cheque.
But
here is a letter that I recieved today, from Brother Ross Terry
of Lethbridge, a long time Union activist, TCRCMWED convention
delegate, Local Chair, Chairman of the ES Trust Fund, RTW committee
member, Respect in the Workplace trainer, Local Chair trainer and
a full time Leading Track Maintainer, as well as husband, father,
grandfather, brother and especially good friend. If he can find
the time, then I definitely can as well, and will from now on.
" Brother
Bill,
Just
an update on my email last month. I spent an hour one beautiful
evening and less than half an hour on another talking to my neighbours
up the block and canvassing them for the Canadian Cancer Society.
My stroll and gabfest netted the Society an extra $150.00 on
top of my donation.
This
month I will be taking a walk for the Canadian Mental Health
Association, who, as you know are another group that are very
important to me. Their campaign runs the entire month of May
and they are a charity that is far less "popular" than
others. Nonetheless, they provide an invaluable service to more
and more in our hectic, stressful world. Anyone interested in
helping out need only contact their local office of the CMHA.
I'm sure they would be delighted to find canvassers even at this
point in their campaign.
Also,
the Canadian Cancer Society is conducting across the country
Relay for Life events. They involve teams of 10 or 12 in a 12
hour relay of walking or running. Cancer survivors and family
members in honor of nonsurvivors are incouraged to participate.
The events run into the darkness when Luminaries which are purchased
by pledges and sponsors are lit in memory of those who didn't
beat the disease and to light the track. They are really special
and emotional events with survivors being highlighted. Anyone
interested can contact their local Canadian Cancer Society office
for a pledge kit. My grandson is participating on his girlfriends'
team from a local restaurant in our local event on June 2. I
sponsored him and even hit up a couple of my regular contributors
that had not been home for the canvas last month! Remember buddy,
TEAMSTERS CARE !
Ross"
Anyone
who wants to contact Ross can do so at arossterry@hotmail.com
. You will never regret striking up a relationship with this guy,
he truly is one of the best.
Let's
all look to the positive, avoid the negative and give so that
others will live. Yes, we are a Union and we deal with workplace
issues and injustice but we are also a Brother and Sisterhood,
and we are a family. There is more to our lives and our concerns,
than simply the "job". We have a conscience and a heart
and a soul and we will always strive for betterment whether on
or off the job. Because TEAMSTERS CARE.
Have
a great weekend and thanks for listening,
Fraternally,
Bill
