Sometime after the 6th of October, you will be receiving a ballot
for you to vote in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters
election of officers. The right to vote is not only a privilege,
it is a responsibility that I urge all of you to exercise.
In the not too distant past, "rank and file elections"
were unheard of for Maintenance of Way Employees in Canada. We
fought hard for the ability to have a voice, and it was not until
we overwhelmingly demanded to be represented by the Teamsters
that we finally saw this dream be realized.
Democracy is what makes this Union great. It is the foundation
of a free society. But democracy comes with a price. It requires
that you take the time to mark your ballot and send it back in.
Not a high price, but a fundamental one.
When your ballot comes in the mail, do not put it aside. Do not
let it sit on your counter, so that "you can get to it later".
Take the few seconds it will take to read and complete the instructions.
That ballot is yours. It is your voice, no one else's. Make your
voice heard... do not let your voice be silenced. Be able to say
with pride...."I voted."
And once you have voted, remind your brothers and sisters a t
work, that they have to get their ballots in as well.
To keep freedom and democracy alive in our Union, as well as in
our lives, we must all do our part, mailing in our ballots and
encouraging everyone else to do the same.
We are Teamsters. We are proud, unified and strong. Insure that
you exercise the right of every Teamster....VOTE!!!
Fraternally,
