Another Fallen Brother

August 18, 2006

Brothers and Sisters,

Last month Steve Franchuk, one of the longest service TP&E employees in the Pacific Region passed away. We are railroaders, accused of having creosote in our veins instead of blood, and one of our own passes on, we are all the lesser for it. Everyone on the steel gangs knew Steve, as did most of the maintenance crews in the Pacific, if not by name then for sure by sight. Almost 30 years Steve put in for CPRail, so let's all take a moment and reflect on his time with us. Here is the obituary from the Vernon Morning Star.

02 Jul 2006 Vernon Morning Star Vernon, BC - Stephan Michael Franchuk

May 22nd, 1946 to July 2nd, 2006

Steve was born in Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Kenora in 1946. He lived with his parents Bill and Jean in Sioux Narrows through his teenage years where he attended the Sioux Narrows Public School and later Father Moss School. Steve worked for his parents at their Tourist camp in Sioux Narrows until he moved to Kenora where he gained employment with Canada Post. He was a familiar face to many as he went about his mail delivery route. In 1975 Steve decided to broaden his horizons and headed west where he soon started working for the CPR. Although he tried other occupations on several occasions, Steve spent the majority of the last 30 years working for the CPR on the Steel gang and track maintenance, much of it in the western provinces. He lived in Vernon, British Columbia for several years and then found that he liked Victoria - he spent his last years living there when he was not working out of town with CPR. Although he lived in British Columbia and worked many years in the west, Steve always returned home to Sioux Narrows each year to visit his Parents, Brother and friends.

Steve was predeceased by his Grandparents Walter and Nell Louttit and Sam and Rose Franchuk. He was also predeceased by his Father Bill in 1989. He leaves to remember him: his Mother Jean and Brother Bill in Kenora, several cousins and close and long time friend Carolyn Leach in Vernon, British Columbia; many many friends in Victoria and Vernon and many employees of the CPR.

Cremation has taken place, honorary pall bearers at the funeral will be a group of Steve’s childhood friends.

A funeral service was held at the Sioux Narrows United Church on August 2nd, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.

Interment will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Sioux Narrows.
In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Salvation Army in Steve’s memory.

Fraternally,

Bill Brehl
