David
Brown and I are continuing to meet with the company in Vancouver.
We are planning to work through the weekend to see if a peaceful
end to this dispute is possible.
I want to thank all of you for your e-mails, letters and calls
of support. They mean a lot during this process and we really
do appreciate it. You have our support as well and we are all
proud to be given the chance to fight for you and for your rights
and privileges.
We managed to break away tonight at around 8:30 and went straight
to the lodge 167 meeting. Members of lodge 210 were there as well
rounding out the meeting to around 70 or 80 members. Lots of good
questions and advice and they seem to have everything in order
in case of a job action in the near future.
Monday there will be a meeting of the strike captains for SOSA
in Toronto that I am not planning to attend as I hope that we
will still be at it out here. JJ will be there and they will be
finalizing their plans and strategies, which we are still hoping
to avoid having to use.
I know that it is hard for all of you to believe that with the
profits that CP has made and with the amount that they are at
risk of losing, they would still be willing to force a job action.
I have to admit, it amazes me as well.
We hear your instructions with the strike mandate and if necessary
we will go that route. But I promise that it will only be as a
last resort, if this last attempt at bargaining fails.
Keep the faith, as long as they are willing to keep talking, there
is the possibility of a fair settlement.
In solidarity,
Bill Brehl
