Teamsters
Care - October 10, 2006

Brothers and Sisters,
Attached is a message that I received today from Brother Ross
Terry. I was sitting at my desk working on a Long Term Disability
issue when it arrived and I believe that I should take a short
break and send it on to all of you.
The Executive Board, through the TCRC MWED sponsored charity "
TEAMSTERS CARE " will of course be involved with the Canadian
Cancer Society this Christmas and we will also be ramping up our
toy drive for sick kids in the very near future. But Brother Terry
brings up a few other good points in his letter.
To give is a personal thing and so I will join Ross in asking
all of you who are thankful for the life that you have, to give
back a little bit.
Spare some change for a homeless kid, donate some old blankets,
coats or hats to a shelter, write a cheque to the Cancer Society
or any other charity, volunteer a few hours a month to read to
someone in long term care, empty your change jar with the CNIB
volunteer who knocks on your door.
There is a lot that you can do, but it all starts with the realization
that you should do something. After reading Ross's letter, that
message got through to me loud and clear once again.
Right now, I'm going to get up and go hug my wife and kids.
In solidarity,

Brother
Bill,
As I sat aroumd our kitchen table, pulled out to its' full dimension,
enjoying a Thanksgiving turkey feast with various fragments of
my extended family, many of the things that I have to be thankful
for were self evident. The things that most tend to cherish in
this life were laid out in front of me.
But, I couldn't help but think of the young guy panhandling with
the Tim Hortons cup on a chilly Friday evening in downtown Toronto.
I wasn't thankful that I wasn't in a similar position or that
our kids are doing alright. I was thankful that both you and I
had the perspective to understand the position that young guy
was in. To know what that is like.
It reminded me that as the seasons change, so change the needs
of those less fortunate than us. Though everyone is busy, I believe
it time to remind the membership to get involved in some type
of Teamsters Care project this fall/winter. Whether it's a winter
coat/glove/toque drive, a non-perishable collection or toy drive,
adopt a family or whatever meets the need in your area, we who
can should do for those who need. It is the type of thing that
sets us apart as an organization and honestly makes you feel good
in the process.
As you recall, I was telling you about the new Multiple Schlerosis
campaign on right now. It gives you the flexibility to mail or
hand deliver personalized requests for donations to friends and
family or whoever you wish. It's a great method for first time
canvassers or those with little time. I hope everyone so inclined
participated in the Annual Terry Fox and CIBC Run For The Cure
runs across the country. The need is large. Cancer, and in particular
breast cancer have touched virtually every one of us, directly
or indirectly.
We really don't need reminding Brother, TEAMSTERS CARE.

A. Ross Terry
