Various News

On August 8th your newly elected Executive Board was sworn into office at Ottawa. Teamsters Canada President Robert Bouvier came up form Laval, QC, with Francois Laporte and officiated the ceremony.

This allowed for the first ever Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Maintenance of Way Employees Division Executive Board meeting to be held on August 9, 2005.

Some of the motions that were passed included:

  • The decision to move our offices fully upstairs as quickly as possible and lease out the downstairs suites.
  • Policies that will drastically reduce costs on expenses, including travel, without reducing the level of service provided.
  • To have the By-laws convention no later than mid November of 2005.
  • The appointment of Convention delegates Brothers Ross Terry, Gary MacDougall, Bill Brake and Tony DellaPorta to the By-laws committee, to prepare the tentative by-laws which will be presented to the convention for their approval.
  • To retain attorney David Brown on a contingency basis to assist on the more complex CROA cases.

We also took a look at the Executive Board member's salaries. Prior to the election we had set the salaries at the same level as the old CSF officer's.

For example, the National Coordinator (now the President) was paid the same as the old System Federation General Chairman, the Assistant National Coordinator (now the Vice President) was paid the same as the old Secretary Treasurer/ Federation General Chairman. The Directors were paid the same as the old General Chairmen.

After the election, there is now the position of Secretary/ Treasurer which does not have a rate of pay assigned.

We decided that as this is a principle officer position with a wide range of extensive duties, it should be paid commiserate with the Vice President position. A motion was made to that effect by President Brehl and seconded by Vice President Tirelli and also included provisions to reduce the salaries of President and Vice President to accomplish the establishment of the Secretary Treasurer salary without an increase in payroll.

All in all, it was a productive meeting and all matters brought forward were settled with consensus.

I want to once again thank all of the newly elected officers, and thank them for their dedication, their hard work and their willingness to listen to each other and to work together for the good of the Brotherhood. You, the membership, chose well in electing this Board and it will be an honour and a pleasure to work with them.

Fraternally,

Bill Brehl
President
